Introduction to Movement- What It Means
Levitation
Using the work of Japanese artist Natsumi Hayashi, we performed our own 'levitation' trick. It is done by one person photographing the other mid air in a pose that makes them seem like they should be on the ground.
Natsumi's photos are actually self portraits, she photographs herself levitating. In her words the reason why she called her site yowayowa is because, "yowayowa is a Japanese term meaning 'weak' or 'feeble.' Since I'm yowayowa, it's really heavy to carry SLR cameras around."
Initial Response.
Second Response.
WWW: I think the photos were clear and came out as creative ways of demonstrating the illusion of levitation.
EBI: Next time I could have gotten lower down on some of my photos to give the impression that the person in the photo was higher up.

Zoom Blur.
It is a photographic technique caused by activating the zoom (by decreasing or increasing it) on your lens while the shutter is still open. This is usually done best with a slower shutter speed, like 1/5 of a second to 0.5" seconds. It can also be done by physically moving the camera to and from the thing or person you are photographing.
Dominic Harris
He is a British artist that used motion blur in his works. His photographs are brightly coloured but aren't distinguishable. His work are supposed to be an alternate more surreal take on reality. He does this using the zoom blur technique. His ideas revolve around the digitalised world.
These are examples of motion blur by photographer Dominic Harris.
My Initial Response.
For my photos I used a shutter speed of about 1/5th of a second.
Second Response.
We improved these images by changing the aperture and ISO of the camera. Having a low ISO/ high aperture limits the amount of light exposure to the camera, on the flip side if pictures are too dark we would increase the ISO number/ decrease aperture number.
Third Response - Photoshop.
This is the original photograph, before I put it into photoshop.
Through google images I picked a photo of a London bus and created a zoom blur effect in a more enhanced way using photoshop. It was fairly simple and only required a few steps.
WWW: I think I managed to capture a good focus point in my photos and it turned out great in showing viewers where the focus point of my pictures are.
EBI: Some of the blurs on my photos weren't as obvious as others, so this is something I may need to work on.

Movement of a Figure.
Work done by Francesca Woodman.
Francesca Woodman, an American photographer, was best known for her photographic work in black and white most of her work feature people who's faces are blurred/ obscured. It is done by the camera being set on a long exposure time (long shutter speed) and the person being photographed moving his/ her head or body. This technique was used by her to create a form of concealment and lack of identity.

This technique was used by her to create a form of concealment and lack of identity.
Her work always involved an element of concealment, some of her works explore many possibilities of representation and distortions of reality.
My First Response.
In this task we replicated Woodman's idea of concealment and used the technique she used of setting her camera to a long exposure time.
I used the shutter speeds, 0.6" and 1" and used a filter to create a black and white style similar to Woodman's work.
WWW: I think the intentions of the idea and the blurring of the photographs were shown well, as well as the lighting in the photographs.
EBI: Due to the long exposure some of the background was blurred too instead of just the person in the photo. This can be fixed next time by using a tripod.

Ghost Images.
Through Photoshop I was able to create a ghost image, using a standard image of an abandoned asylum as a background and a image of a ghost girl off of google.
Portrait Disorder
Romain Laurent -
Romain Lauren is a cinema graph maker who influenced our work. He works doing gifs by compiling multiple photos together and letting them cycle through. Laurent uses a quirky, surreal and energetic perspective in his pictures; his works are always filled with creativity. He does this by creating a surreal gif or sometimes by combining strange things.
First Response
In this we more used his work with gifs as a basis and took more straight forward shots for our first response.
Second Response.
Next we incorporated levitation with gifs. Here my friend is seemingly floating towards me, where in reality I photographed him jumping while he was moving closer to me aswell.
WWW: I think I was quite successful in capturing fluid movement in both pictures. The lighting was also good in the first photo.
EBI: However, in the second image the lighting was not as good and was a lot darker due to the fact that I needed to use a fast shutter speed to capture my friend midair. Next time in order to make the image brighter, I need to use a higher ISO number. A tripod could also be used so the background isn't as shakey.

Last Response
In this final task we were asked to compile a couple of different styles into one final gif. We used the head movements from the first task and movement without actually moving from the second task.
WWW:I prioritised the camera shutter speed well in order to capture movement
EBI: Next time I should lower the ISO so the pictures aren't as bright.

Light Painting
In this task, using a torch/ glow stick, I was required to make drawings from light. This is done by having long shutter speed (like 10", or using 'bulb' mode), meaning the movements of light could be tracked by the camera. In order to counter act the long light exposure we would use a large F stop (smaller aperture) like F13, and have a very low ISO number such as 100. A tripod is also essential to have so that the photo does not become blurred. This is because, at that kind of long shutter speed, any slight movements can cause the image to blur dramatically.
Micheal Bossanko.
The link artist for this topic is Micheal Bossanko. He uses this technique to paint pictures that are both whimsical and surreal by using colourful lights to create beautiful and creative images.
First Response.
EBI: Next time we should use a lower f stop and higher ISO so we can see the lights. (And have a stronger light source.)
Separate Response (done outside lesson)
(Done at home)
Second Response (in class)
Last Response.
We learned that a strong light source was vital in having a good light painting. Unlike in the first two class responses, the painting was clear. Next time I will experiment more with powerful coloured torches.
Overall I think I portrayed the intents shown by the artist and I think that I eventually managed to find a good ISO number and exposure time. I think the shapes I chose to draw suited the theme of

Final Piece
I chose this image as it shows a good use of lighting and technique of light painting, I was also able to polish it up on photoshop well.
I like this image as it was creative and I managed to recreate the image well using a torch, I also used the aperture, ISO and shutter speed well.
I think this was my best gif as the lighting is great and the space between each image was just right and I managed to not go off balance too much considering I did not use a tripod.

I think to technique used for the light painting was done well, aswell as a creative image I thin the exposure and lighting was handled well.
I like this image as I think that lighting represents that of Francesca Woodman's and I used a good exposure time to recreate the movement blur.
I chose this image as it displays a good use of zoom blur technique. For this image I believe that I managed settings like ISO and shutter speed well.
